Bank Robbers! (Lindsay Baers)

O.K. There's frequently a good deal of entertainment to be had from observing the raw stupidity of the spam that hits the inbox. This one caught my eye as a good example of the short bus mentality of many spam messages... The gist of it is as follows...

Re: Success Starts Here!

Have you ever driven up to the bank and seen the guards
loading bags of money into the armored truck and dreamed
about just one...or even all of those bags...getting
loaded into your trunk?

Guess what? Taking checks from the bank is JUST AS GOOD!
Last month I took $87,978 from local banks and YOU CAN TOO.

In fact you won't believe how easy it is to virtually
steal $4000...$10,000 or MORE each and every month until
you do it yourself.

I want to show you my simple system and help you get rich
too.

Hmmm... Appealing to those people who fancy themselves the felonious sort...

Either way, I did a little whois lookup and the source of this spam seems to be the following individual, who is listed as the contact for this and another domain involved in the spam-fest that yielded this treasure...

So I called Lindsay, and the amazing part is she picked up. Now, it's very unusual for me to find a spammer so quickly. Either way I asked her why she was spamming me. Instead of answering the question, she asks why I don't just unsubscribe... sigh.... So I ask her where she got my email address, and she asks me what it is...

O.K., stupid, I know. Like shooting fish in the barrel, but...

Since she already has it, I give it to her for her to look up in her "database of victims". She says she will call me back with the source database.. Um, yeah, and I'm a Chinese Fighter Pilot...

Oh well..

Any legal eagles out there know if there's a lawsuit one could launch for mental anguish, anti-anxiety pill costs, or maybe therapy brought on by chicks like the Lindsay Baers?

What is this blog about?

Everyone knows what spam is. It's what the majority of email clogging the internet is composed of these days. It's why legitimate businesses like mine can't seem to get order tracking email through to our customers because it *looks* like spam to some spam blocking program. It's why many kids in elementary school with email accounts scratch their heads wondering what Viagra or Penis Pumps are.

It's got to be the most annoying waste of time I've encountered in the online world.

The bottom line is that there are people behind these incessant spam messages. No matter how well hidden, no matter how obfuscated, they are there, lurking in the darkness, waiting for a few people out of the millions they spam to buy something from them.

So here's the deal. I'm inviting those technically skilled of you with the yearning to do a little to combat these scummy operators to chime in and contribute to this little experiment. I've decided to take 1 or 2 of those thousands of spam messages churning through my email account and research them every now and then; find out who they are, either by tracing back the URL they are trying to get me to visit, or other creative means.

My thought is that the more exposed these people are, the less comfortable they would be sending those millions of emails. Pull back the veil of anonymity and secrecy these people hide behind, and show the world exactly whose to blame for clogging our networks and bombarding us with the frustrating chore of sorting out our friends from the garbage that clutters our inboxes.

Every time I successfully locate one of these people, through publicly available information, I will post the general content of their spam message, then post the contact information I found. Then, if possible, I will email them with a link to this blog.

A very simple plan. Will it make a difference? I do not know. Will it make me feel better? ABSOLUTELY!
